A Rooster Crows

This morning one of the roosters crowed for the first time.  It startled me from sleep.  At first I thought something was being strangled.  It wasn’t your typical crow, instead sounding more like a creaky gate opening.  Or like something was being strangled.  Only after hearing it three or four times did I realize it was a bad attempt at a crow.  I’m not trying to be hard on the kid.  It was his first time, after all.

I don’t know which rooster it was.  I’m supposed to have 3-4 roosters, but the only one I can identify as such is Bob.  It’s pretty obvious.  Of the 4 Black Breasted Game Fowl that I have, he’s the only one with a black breast.  The other three all have reddish-tan breast feathers.  Now I understand why they’re called “black breasted”.

Bob does seem to get into squabbles with the white, black-necked chicken more often than with any of the other birds.  So, I think that one’s a rooster too.  The neck feathers of roosters are supposed to be more hair-like, but they all look about the same to me.  I need to research other ways to tell roosters from hens.
