13.0.3.6.19 A Dog’s Life
My dearest Scotty, I am sorry. I wish with all my heart that you had gently died in your sleep one night after a life overfull. I feel like I betrayed you, that I cut your life thread too short and that tomorrow, maybe, you would have been back to your old self. Ears perked, eyes…

Bob cat in the chicken run tonight. Four chickens dead; one really freaked out and hiding on the shelter. I didn’t know it was a bobcat until Sadie chased it out of the long grass. I thought it was a raccoon when I heard the rustle in the grass ahead of the dog. The moment they…

13.0.3.0.3 (9 Dec 2015)
That damned bobcat… I thought I would get home tonight before he showed up again. Another 4 chickens dead tonight. Bob the rooster was one of them. I hope he died fighting valiantly. I’m going to have to keep the birds cooped 24/7 until I can get the automatic door installed this coming weekend.

Flirted with you all my life…
I’m overwhelmed by guilt, sadness and depression today. I try to be a good person but sometimes I feel like I’m pretending to be something I’m not. Sadie got an armadillo last night and I let her kill it. The poor animal was in a bad way by the time I pulled the dog off…

Bantam Chick Update
The bantam chick is dead. A snake got into the coop. It wasn’t Big Black rat snake; he’s too big to have gotten in. I suspect it was the smallish snake I saw by the coop the other night. That makes it 2 for 2. Both chicks have lived about a week then died.

Farm Life — Aug 12
The other day the guineas got out of their pen. There were 6 that night. The next morning there were 3. I thought it was because the door between the run and the yard was closed. Maybe that’s why they couldn’t find their way back into the coop? So I started to leave it open.…

So I’m at my beekeeping class. Got my travel mug filled with fruit juice and a mason jar filled with the same in the truck so I can top the mug off. One of my classmates asks me if that’s my “Uncle Si’s Iced Tea”. I laugh and say yes, but had to google it…

13.0.1.12.11 – Feeding the birds
I wasn’t sure what to do with the raccoon carcass. My first thought was to leave it hanging in the coop. It would attract flies and the maggots would drop from the carcass, providing protein for the chickens. But then I worried about raccoon roundworms infecting the chickens, which might infect the eggs. My second…

Hawks (13.0.1.12.10)
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been hearing hawks calling. I can hear them even when I’m inside, so they have to be close. It’s unusual that I’m hearing them every single day. The other day I came home from running errands and saw a couple of hawks fly off from the trees in my front yard.…
